Sixteen years ago after the battle at the Trident, he found Lyanna and took her home where she gave birth. After Lyanna died four years later, Ned promised he would keep Jon safe and Rhaegar agreed and allowed Ned to foster his son. Ned proposed the idea of marrying Jon to to his eldest daughter, Sansa the day she was born. The King Rhaegar agreed.
